Meet Dr. Lopez

Dr. Dr. Nelson Lopez is a board-certified Ophthalmologist and dedicated medical professional based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since January 2017, he has served as a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist at the Lopez Eye Institute, where he provided exceptional eye care to his patients. Concurrently, Dr. Lopez has been a Primary and Sub-Investigator at Altea/IMA Research, contributing to cutting-edge clinical trials in ophthalmology and other medical fields.

Dr. Lopez partners with his patients to manage many ocular conditions, including amblyopia (lazy eye), glaucoma, allergy, dry eye, cataracts, diabetes and macular degeneration.

He also treats refractive (vision-related) conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (oval-shaped eyes) and presbyopia (reading vision).

Dr. Lopez specializes in surgical treatment of many types of strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), using eye muscle recession and resection techniques, as well as plication and tenotomy methods.

Education and Training

Dr. Lopez earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California (2005-2009), following a post-baccalaureate program at California State University, Fullerton (2002-2005). He completed his medical training at Valley Hospital Medical Center/Touro University in Las Vegas (2009-2013). Licensed by the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine since 2013, he achieved board certification from the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology in 2015.

With a strong commitment to advancing medical knowledge, Dr. Lopez has been actively involved in clinical research since 2012. His research portfolio includes serving as Principal Investigator and Sub-Investigator in numerous Phase 1b to Phase 3 clinical trials, focusing on conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, major depressive disorder, amblyopia, postoperative corneal pain, schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder. Notable studies include innovative trails on mobile refraction technology and binocular video games for pediatric amblyopia treatment.

Since July 2021, Dr. Lopez has also served as Medical Student Preceptor and Attending Physician at Community Hospital Health Associates, mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. His dual expertise in clinical practice and research underscores his dedication to improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of ophthalmology.
