Meet Dr. Havins

Dr. Don Havins is an ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon at Nevada Eye Physicians. He is board certified by both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Legal Medicine. With years of experience and training, Dr. Havins offers exceptional outcomes to his many Las Vegas, NV patients.

Education and Training

Dr. Havins attended San Diego State University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree with high honors. Graduating from Wake Forest University School of Medicine with his medical degree in 1970, he interned in surgery at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Following two years with the U.S. Navy (one year as a medical officer on the USS Daniel Webster SSBN-626 nuclear submarine and one year at the Long Beach Regional Naval Medical Center), he completed an ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in 1976. He later completed his fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas in Houston, TX in 1981. Dr. Havins earned a master’s degree in management from Claremont Graduate University, while also practicing ophthalmology in Upland, CA. From 1982 to 1995, Dr. Havins practiced ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery in Las Vegas, NV. Returning to San Diego in 1995, he attended law school at the University of San Diego where he graduated cum laude and was an editor of the law review, as well as selected to Order of the Coif. Remaining at the University of San Diego School of Law for an additional year, Dr. Havins earned a Master of Laws Degree and graduated cum laude in health law, while practicing ophthalmology part time.

Additional Training

Returning to Las Vegas in 1999, Dr. Havins served as a law clerk for a district court judge while practicing medicine part time. From 2001 to 2008, he worked as the executive director and legal counsel for the Clark County Medical Society. Following a stint as Executive Director of the Nevada Board of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Havins received an appointment to the faculty of Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he currently serves as an associate dean, professor, Director Medical Jurisprudence, and Professor of Ophthalmology – all while also practicing general ophthalmology. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and the American College of Legal Medicine.

Professional Memberships

Dr. Havins is a member of the Nevada Bar and is in-house counsel for Touro University Nevada. He serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Legal Medicine and the American Board of Legal Medicine. Dr. Havins is also currently the president of the Nevada State Medical Association.
