Blurry vision, trouble seeing at night or in bright lights can be a sign that you’re actually developing cataracts.

Cataract surgery is becoming more and more common so we sent our Ken Smith to Nevada Eye Physicians to find out more about it.

Nevada Eye Physicians has been providing quality eye care in Southern Nevada for over 25 years. We’re at the Russell and Fort Apache location and it’s time for me to get a checkup. We’re inside Nevada Eye Physicians and it’s time for my annual exam. Believe it or not, I do wear glasses. Joining us right now is Dr. Darrick Neibaur and tell us more about this awesome facility.

This is … we’re Nevada Eye Physicians. We formerly were Nevada Eye and Ear, but we changed our name to Nevada Eye Physicians to more represent what we do here. This location has been here for a few years now, but we do have locations all over the valley including Boulder City and Pahrump. We’re here to help and service all the people here in the valley. We do have a great staff, great doctors. Hard qualified physicians and staff that are also certified in eyes that are really good at giving patient care as well as patient satisfaction.

What is the rewarding part of helping people see again?

I have a patient that comes to me and they have poor vision, or they’ve lost vision. For me, just helping those patients see better. That’s the most gratifying thing about it.

It’s about time for my eye exam. Shall we go in and see how my eyes are doing?

Sure.

All righty. Five, two, six, three?

You can sit back.

Just cataracts in general. When does that start developing on people?

Cataracts is a very common condition. Actually, it’s the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. It’s because a cataract is the lens of your eye. Everybody was born with a natural clear lens. Over time, that lens clouds and that’s called the cataract. It’s just a natural changing process of your eye. Anybody who doesn’t need glasses, can see very far away, in their 40s are gonna start needing reading glasses. They’re gonna need those, and that’s that process of hardening of the lens, and it eventually develops into a cataract.

One thing that’s unique is we operate at a facility that’s eyes only, so the only thing we do there is eyes. We do cataract surgery, all kinds of eye surgery, but we have the latest state-of-the-art laser technology and cataract equipment where a laser can actually do all the cutting on the surface of the eye, on the front part of the lens and the cataract itself. It can actually break it up into small pieces. I have some patients that come in and can’t see their hand even in front of their face. That’s how bad the cataracts can get. Immediately, those patients, they can see right after cataract surgery.

You’re almost the perfect amount of near-sightedness, if you could say that, right? You’ll never need reading glasses like everybody else. You’ll be able to read until you get bad cataracts. You know?

And then I’m visiting you in 20 years or whatever.

Yeah, that’s right.
